Emergency Sewage Outfall Repair

The City of Chilliwack owns and operates a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) that treats municipal wastewater generated from within the City. The WWTP is authorized under the Municipal Wastewater Regulation for a maximum flow of 80,700 m3/day. The treated effluent is discharged through a submerged 1,200 mm diameter outfall located downstream of Wellington Bar in the Fraser River.

The effluent outfall pipe experienced a break that required an emergency repair. The City received emergency authorizations from the DFO, MWLNR, and Transport Canada to complete these repairs.  This required replacing approximately 160m of carbon steel pipe with HDPE pipe, meanwhile reusing the existing section of discharge diffusers.
