Accessibility and Inclusion Plan

Accessible British Columbia Act

In 2022, the Province of BC passed the Accessible British Columbia Act, which requires all public sector organizations to establish:

  • An accessibility committee
  • An accessibility Plan
  • A mechanism for collecting feedback on accessibility

You can find information on each of these on this page.

Accessibility Committee

In January 2021, An Accessibility Advisory Panel (AAP) was developed by the City, under the Mayor’s Task Force on Inclusiveness, Diversity and Accessibility. The AAP met quarterly in 2021 and 2022 to provide feedback on accessibility issues to the City. In 2023, this panel became the City’s Accessibility and Inclusion Advisory Committee and started working on the City’s next Accessibility Plan. More information about the committee is available online at chilliwack.com/AIAC.

Accessibility and Inclusion Plan

In 2022, the Mayor’s Task Force on Inclusiveness, Diversity and Accessibility created a plan to help make Chilliwack a more inclusive, diverse, and accessible community. The Action Plan focuses on six long-term goals and serves as the City's current accessibility plan.

Vision:

To support an inclusive, diverse, and accessible community where all residents have the opportunity to thrive.

Goals:

Apartment building icon     More accessible City buildings, programs, parks and public spaces (learn more)
Heart with a heartbeat icon     The well-being of marginalized community members
Handshake icon     Relationship building with Indigenous neighbours
Stack of books icon       Equity and inclusion education for City staff
Group of people icon     Broader public participation in City processes
Money icon     Funding opportunities to support inclusion, diversity, and accessibility

How we will get there:

The Action Plan lists steps the City can take to get to each goal. Some of these steps are already underway, and others will take time. Read the Action Plan for more information.
