Banford Bridge Replacement

Bridge replacement was completed in mid-December and the intersection was re-opened to traffic. Asphalt paving over top the bridge girders will occur in the spring to coincide with warmer weather. The bridge will be closed briefly while these activities occur.

Future Works

Asphalt paving will begin in the spring. Banford Road at McGuire Road will be closed to all traffic through the work zone. A detour route will be in effect to access properties via Prairie Central Road. Traffic will be single-lane alternating at the Banford/McGuire intersection for east and west-bound traffic on McGuire Road.

Project Details

The project included the following:

  • Realignment of existing Fortis Gas Main to run south along Banford from Prairie Central Road.
  • The removal of the existing 7m bridge replaced with a new 9m wide bridge complete with concrete filled steel piles.
    • The bridge will be wider, allowing additional space for pedestrian passage and for vehicles to turn on the bridge.
  • Reconstruction of the banks of Semiault Creek.
  • Restoration and vegetative planting of the watercourse channel cross section.
  • Road construction works.
  • Replacement of the 600mm diameter storm main across McGuire Road.
  • Re-alignment of 50mm diameter water main across the underside of the proposed bridge.

Background Information

Banford Bridge over Semiault Creek at the intersection of Banford Road and McGuire Road is one of 23 roadway bridges in Chilliwack. This particular bridge has been previously identified in inspection reports as needing a full replacement due to its age and poor condition.

In 2024, the City hired ISL Engineering and Land Services to provide detailed engineering, environmental and construciton services for the bridge replacement.

In 2025, City Council accepted staff recommendation to award the low-bid tender for construction to West Shore Constructors Limited.
