The Seniors Connect Café occurs the first and third Thursday of each month at Homer Restaurant (46090 Yale Road) and every second and fourth Thursday at Royal Canadian Legion Vedder Golden 280 (5661 Vedder Road). Drop in between 10:00am and 12:00pm on these dates for a free cup of coffee or tea and for a conversation. There is a facilitator present at each event. Generation Health is a FREE 10-week healthy lifestyle program for children and their families. We will be meeting weekly (Monday evenings) at the Chilliwack YMCA as of Sept 30th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. During the first hour of the program, we have a group facilitator that educates children and parents about various topics related to healthy living such as: healthy eating, active living, goal setting, healthy body image and self esteem, etc. During the second hour, the children have time for play-based exercise in the gym with a physical activity specialist while the parents cover additional topics with the group facilitator around positive family mealtimes and physical activity experiences, cooking and playing together, and positive parenting. Families who participate in this program will receive a FREE 6 month membership to YMCA Chilliwack. 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm Just for kids! A fun afterschool book club that focuses on picture books. Listen, print, draw and rate the story of the day in your very own journal. Join Miss Maria and Billy, the goat puppet, to explore some entertaining titles. For children in grades 1-3, registration required.

7 pm – 8:30 pm Join us for a special author event with Beatrice Elaine Silver. Beatrice is a local Sumas author and advocate. Beatrice built her career in education and First Nations leadership. She was a primary school teacher, and then a school principal. Eventually she held the position of Coordinator Of Indigenous Education For The Ministry Of Education, overseeing Indigenous Education in the Fraser Valley School Districts. In addition, she has served as the Chief of Sumas First Nation. Lex̲èywa - I Pass the Torch to You is her first published book. Her memoir begins before school: a childhood in a small Indian Reserve, first surrounding the reader with her loving family. Many children in Beatrice's generation were taken from home by Indian Affairs agents when they were too young to be able to later recall that safety and certainty. This story allows the reader to walk in the little shoes of a girl who survived the infamous school. She did so by sheer force of will, generated by confidence in the love of her family and the strength of her seven-year-old identity.

We will be hosting a complimentary pancake breakfast to show our gratitude and appreciation to all seniors in our community. Crossroads presents the artworks by Karlie Norrish McChesney. Karlie’s art making frequently explores her love of perspective and structural form.  Her art practice requires much measuring, calculating and arranging of colour, so much so that her work is a form of puzzle solving. Her preferred medium is fibre in the form of stitched textiles with an element of mixed media applied to the surface or standing as an installation accompanying the 2D work; these materials include paint, paper, plastic, metal, clay, and/or wood. This body of work is her response to a time of great change in her life, where many decisions were required. All the pieces of work contain a path representing the choices a person has available to them and a container representing the restrictions or parameters that influence the decision making process. Karlie is a retired art teacher from the Chilliwack School District.  She is an active member in SAQA (Studio ArtQuilts Association), FAN (Fibre Art Network) and in the CVAA (Chilliwack Visual Artists Association). This is Karlie’s first solo exhibition and she is very excited to share it with you. She invites everyone to join her at the opening reception on October 12, 2019 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the O’Connor Group Art Gallery, 9201 Corbould Street, Chilliwack, B.C.  The exhibition runs from October 10 to November 16. Gallery hours are 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm, Wednesday to Saturday, as well as 6:30 – 7:00 pm preceding evening theatre performances.  Admission is free. Since 1984, the Rotary Club of Chilliwack has held our annual book sale to raise funds for community and international projects. We rely on the community of Chilliwack for their donations of reading materials. Throughout the year, a dedicated team of Rotarians, friends and community members sort the donated books. We are very thankful for the generosity of the Chilliwack community. The proceeds from our book sale help to fund many of our local Rotary projects.

Come join us on a Journey of Discovery to the Land of the Ice Bear. Cooper will recount his eighth journey to Canada’s High Arctic along with some great friends that to love to explore. However, there is a twist! The average age of this group of adventurers is nearly 70 and they will be hauling all their own gear of 70 kilograms on Makinson Inlet, Ellesmere Island for 28 days. This special event will be filled with stories of human resilience and the marvels of nature.

The Chilliwack Quilters’ Guild is holding our Biennial Quilt Show in October 2019. We anticipate over 200 quilts, in a wide variety of styles. There will be a Merchants Mall, Tea Room and quilting demonstrations. A beautiful Raffle Quilt and several Raffle Baskets are available to be won. The venue has ample free parking and is wheelchair accessible. Free admission for husbands and children under 12.

Explore the needs of living things (i.e: food, shelter, safety). Includes songs/rhymes, a story book, and tie-ins to math and literacy. Presentation by UFV’s “Let’s Talk Science”. For ages 3 to 6 years old, registration required, call or drop by the library to sign up.

The Annual Chilliwack Hospice Gala event is the biggest and most important fundraising event of the year for Chilliwack Hospice Society.
