Daylight Saving Time Change
On March 2, 2026, the province announced that British Columbia will adopt permanent, year-round daylight saving time. You will not need to change your clocks this fall.
The benefits of this change are more consistency and fewer disruptions to sleep patterns, school schedules, and daily routines and more daylight during the winter.
This change also means that the sun will come up later than you are used to. Similar to communities in nothern Canada, there will be several weeks this winter where you may be walking your dogs, taking your kids to school, and/or driving to work before sunrise. At the latest, the sun will rise shortly after 9 am at the end of this December.
There are several steps the City has been taking to create safer roads and pathways after sunset. These include:
- Upgrading all of the City’s streetlights with LED fixtures.
- Adding new ornamental (metal pole) streetlighting as part of city projects, including on multi-use pathways.
- Installing embedded centreline reflectors on several of the City’s rural roads.
- Improving existing pedestrian crossings with RRFB (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon) signals.
There are several steps you can take to make you, your family, and your neighbours even safer on our roads after dark. These include:
- Checking the angle and brightness of your headlights, ensuring they are aimed properly and that they meet minimum and maximum lighting standards.
- Cleaning your windshield of any fog, dust, ice or snow.
- Slowing down and being extra attentive for people, pets, and wildlife.
- Wearing bright, reflective clothing to be as visible as possible, including for your pets.
- Pushing the button at signalized intersections to activate crosswalk lights.
- Walking on roads with sidewalks or paths where possible. Where paths and sidewalks do not exist, walking on the leftmost side of the road facing traffic.
The City understands that some roads face different nighttime safety challenges than others. If you have any requests for improvements to the City’s roads, whether it be for lighting, improved sidewalks and paths, road markings, or other related changes, please reach out to the Engineering Department by email at [email protected], by phone at 604-793-2907, or by visiting the 3rd floor of City Hall at 8550 Young Rd.
