Health of Homeless Persons
Those surveyed suffered from a variety of chronic and acute illnesses that are aggravated by life on the streets:
- 70% of people who are homeless in Chilliwack are living within an addiction
- 46% have a mental illness
- 13% have a medical condition
- 28% have a physical disability
Poor diet, stress, cold and damp living conditions, along with inadequate sleeping arrangements, sanitation and hygiene, increase the risk of health problems and decrease life expectancy.
