After the COVID disruption and several changes to their lineup, the band has been relentlessly rehearsing since the summer of 2024. Description: As the climate continues to warm, extreme wildfires will likely increase. Join us at this Science Café to learn about the impacts of wildfire smoke on health & ways to protect yourself from smoke-filled skies. Dr. Luisa Giles’ talk will focus on how wildfires affect health and outline simple strategies that you can use to protect yourself when the skies are smokey. Dr. Anne-Marie Nicol will provide an introduction to the BREATHE project: a community-based initiative that teaches community members & leaders how to build DIY air cleaners to improve air quality. SFU Co-op education student Prem Gundarah is a research assistant with the Pacific Institute of Pathogens, Pandemics & Society. Both Prem and Dr. Nicol will lead the hands-on session to build DIY air cleaners. We will have a hands-on demonstration to build a DIY air cleaner out of a box fan and a furnace filter. These air cleaners can help improve air quality indoors and are a cheaper, cost-effective alternative. We will have supplies for 20 people to build and take home a DIY air cleaner. If we have more than 20 attendees, we will buddy up for the building. | ||
