Reading Buddies is a program that pairs high school students and adult volunteers with kids in Grades 1 to 4 who need extra help. Sign up begins in September, and we will continue matching up buddies until spring 2017. To learn more, visit the Chilliwack, Sardis or Yarrow Library.

The Marriage Course which offers tools to any married couple, whether they have a strong marriage or are struggling, in order to help build a strong, healthy and lasting relationship that lasts a lifetime. Begins on Fri., Sept. 23 at 6:30 and meets once per week for 7 weeks. The evening begins with dinner, a video presentation on one of the following topics: Building Strong Foundations - The Art of Communication - Resolving Conflict - The Power of Forgiveness - Impact of Family: Past & Present - Good Sex - Love in Action; followed by workbook exercises prompting private couple discussions. This 12 week program runs Fridays from 12:30-3:30. It is about staying fit and healthy, and is free for permanent residents.

Wednesdays, Oct 12 – Dec 14, 2:30 pm – 4 pm When a child reads with a dog, they start to relax and forget about feeling nervous about reading. This is a free program for ages 6+ who want to improve their reading. Sessions will be facilitated by Taylah, a 5 year old Collie, and her handler Sue, both of whom have been trained by the St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog program. Space is limited; please contact the Yarrow Library to schedule a session.

“ COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES ” Local Abstract Artist Vincent Mikuska has used hints and suggestions of landscape elements in his work to try and create an essence or experience of the landscape. There is a willingness to create associations between different elements of a visual experience. A world where line has poetic rhythm, colour a musical tone. Space can be hinted or defined. “ I try and find new patterns without concentrating on recreating the details of what I see” The effect is to be a cumulative effect of looking, not a single stare but what happens as you visually interact with your surroundings over a given time. Trying to get to the essence without the details.

7 pm – 8:30 pm 2017 is the centenary of Vimy Ridge, the most significant Canadian battle of the First World War and a defining moment in our nation’s history. Travel with us to the Canadian battlefields, cemeteries and memorials of Normandy and Flanders. More than a travelogue, this presentation uses slides and personal narratives to explore the Normandy beaches and the Vimy memorial, as well as additional interesting sites and remarkable heroic individuals of both world wars. Bruce Bennewith, of Rainbow Country Travel and Tours, is a local travel consultant with extensive experience and a particular interest in historic destinations.

A Handmade Christmas Bring your holiday spirit and join instructor Steph Brubaker as she guides crafters and artists of all skill levels through mixed media techniques to create charming handmade Christmas décor. As part of this hands-on workshop you will learn how to work a hand cranked die-cut machine in the Arts Council’s very own Die-Cut Corner, which can be used outside of class as one of the Arts Council’s many membership benefits. 12 pm – 4 pm From it’s hurried wartime construction in 1942, until its closure in 1995, Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack was a huge contributor to the economy, community and history of Chilliwack. The CFB Historical Society (CFBCHS) gathers, maintains and displays archives in order to preserve, relive and remember that proud history. Dedicated members of the society will be in the library this afternoon to identify your military artifacts and badges, assist you in researching your family’s military genealogy and share memories of the Base.

On Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m., The Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra and Chorus invite you to be dazzled by the wondrous unity of movement and beautiful music as they present CIRQUE to begin their 2016-17 concert series. Back again by popular demand, guest performers featured with the orchestra are "Blink Acro," the Fraser Valley Academy of Dance, and local dancer/contortionist, Zoey Howe. 3 pm – 4pm The ultimate structural engineering challenge, 5 sheets of paper, how tall can you build it? How much weight can it hold? The class will begin with a brief lecture from an Engineer on static structures and some basics of structural engineering. After the lecture the participants will begin a basic engineering competition! The participants will be given 5 sheets of paper and a roll of tape. The object of the class is to build the tallest and strongest structure possible. The towers will be tested until they collapse, at which point the number of books will be tallied and multiplied by the height of the tower for the final score. The participant with the highest score wins! Parents are encouraged to attend, however space is limited to 15 participants so please preregister. Ages 8 and up. Presented by Fraser Valley Makerspace.

Chilliwack residents are invited to a public event to hear Judy Graves, Vancouver’s first and only Homelessness Advocate speak about the social and economic costs of homelessness. Throughout her 33-year career with the City of Vancouver, Judy Graves cultivated caring connections with people living on the streets and in shelters, and served as a tireless advocate on behalf of those marginalized by homelessness.  Her work is respected by citizens across Canada. She has received numerous awards and accolades including an Honorary Doctorate in Law from the University of British Columbia in 2009, an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from the Vancouver School of Theology in 2013, and most recently the Freedom of the City award on January 23, 2014.

“Bright Ideas” of student directors featured in UFV Theatre’s dynamic production of 7 Stories The second production of UFV Theatre’s “Bright Ideas” season is Morris Panych’s absurd comedy 7 Stories, a directing collaboration of fourth-year students Natasha Beaumont and Courtney Kelley. The play tells the story of a man deliberating suicide on the ledge of a high-rise building who is drawn into the bizarre personal lives of the building’s residents. 7 Stories runs November 24 – December 4. “One of the goals that we are hoping to accomplish with this show is recognizing the idea that every person is living their own unique life; and that this life can look completely different from an outside perspective,” says Kelley. “Contrast, perspective, and personal attitudes are all explored in 7 Stories, and we are aiming to do this in a very approachable way for the audience. We are working on showcasing the humour in the piece just as much as the distress. We want to highlight that both can exist in the same space at the same time, and just how that relationship works.” 7 Stories features the acting talents of Victoria Beaumont, Phay Gagnon, Des Hale, Blake Kimber, Emily MacKinnon, Mhairi McKay and Matthew Strauss. Now in its 37th season, UFV Theatre is taking a brand-new approach. With a theme of Bright Ideas: Contemporary, Student-Produced Performances, the 2016/17 promises innovative, eccentric, and electric plays that will challenge and engage audiences. “We are thrilled about this new approach to the season of theatre and are very excited to see students’ work culminate in seeing their artistic visions come to life on stage,” says Theatre department head Heather Davis-Fisch. Coming next March is Anne Carson’s interpretation of Bakkhai by Euripides, with collaborative direction and design by UFV theatre professors Raïna von Waldenburg and Parjad Sharifi. This contemporary adaptation of the classic Greek tragedy will integrate physical theatre and digital projection. The season closes in April with Grand Theft Terra Firma: Stories of (Re)Conciliation. A devised piece (created by the performers) directed by Phay Gagnon, this performance explores how S’ólh Téméxw — the traditional and unceded territories of the Stó:lō people — was colonized in the 1850s and 1860s and asks how that history is lived today. UFV Theatre will be launching its long-awaited Theatre major in January 2017. Part of the Bachelor Arts degree, the major allows students to develop foundational performance, communication, and technical skills and offer extensive opportunities to enrich their creative and research practices. All UFV Theatre’s programs offer small class sizes, faculty and staff with extensive professional and academic credentials, rigorous courses, and the opportunity for students to develop creative skills and practical experience by working onstage and behind the scenes on productions. 7 Stories runs Nov 24 – Dec 4 at the UFV Performance Theatre, 45635 Yale Road, Chilliwack.
