Town Dyke Update

Thank-you to those who attended the two community meetings on June 28, 2016, to discuss flood protection improvements of the Town Dyke from Young Road at the Hope Slough to Chilliwack Mountain. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to have dialogue around this initiative and want to relay back what we heard, and update you with our next steps.

For those of you that weren’t able to attend the events, we covered the project background, context and process, the intent and necessity of the improvements, with a focus on the conceptual options for the portion through Rotary Trail and connection to Young Road. Most importantly, we were there to hear the thoughts, comments, and questions from local community members. A link to the presentation materials is provided here.

A total of 38 residents attended the two meetings, with a few community members attending both. Residents were understanding and generally supportive of efforts needed for the city to be protected in a significant flood threat. Many comments were received encouraging the project to advance and offered comments on their preferences for the concepts presented. Some citizens had questions around potential property impacts (privacy, site access, property values), the operation and functions of the future flood gate planned at the Hope Slough, potential emergency or contingency plans should the currently defined works not be completed, and the desire to see further consideration to alternate routes that include more First Nation lands. Further information on these questions is available in the FAQ document, which was made available at the community meetings.

The City will continue its efforts on collaborative discussions with Skwah FN members as their independent flood protection study unfolds. We will keep the community apprised of any further updates on this website.
