Crime Free Multi-Housing Program
Why Crime Free?
When criminals and other destructive residents operate out of rental properties, neighbourhoods suffer and managers can face serious consequences, including:
- Loss of valued residents
- Decline in property values
- Property damage from abuse, retaliation or neglect
- Civil penalties including forfeiture or temporary closure of the property
- Fear and frustration when dealing with dangerous and threatening residents
- Resentment and anger between neighbours, residents and property managers
The Chilliwack Crime Free Multi-Housing Program is designed to help residents, owners, and managers of rental properties in preventing drugs and other illegal activities from developing on their properties.
The program utilizes a 3 part strategy that ensures crime prevention goals are maintained while preserving a resident-friendly approach. Property managers receive training in effective property management techniques and Residential Tenancy Law. Both property owners/managers and residents are encouraged to take a personal interest in what goes on in their apartment community. One of the prevention strategies includes residents signing a lease addendum, where they agree that they will not engage in criminal behavior on the rental property. Contravention of this Addendum is grounds for eviction under the rules of the Residential Tenancy Act.
The City of Chilliwack has 41 apartment communities participating with the Chilliwack Crime Free Multi Housing program.
