Housing Projects
Through the Chilliwack Homelessness Action Plan and Chilliwack Healthier Community, the City works with the Province, and local shelter, housing, and social service providers to collectively address the need for increased shelter, supportive housing, affordable rental housing, and expanded health services.
Since 2011, the City of Chilliwack has waived over $8 million in development fees, provided cash in lieu contributions, expedited development approvals, and developed flexible zoning to leverage both capital and operational funding through BC Housing and CMHC to support the development of an additional:
- 213 affordable (below market) rental units
- 261 supportive housing units
- 51 transitional supportive housing units
- 29 recovery & treatment beds
- 146 emergency shelter beds
- 26 seasonal (winter) shelter beds
*All of these projects are funded by BC Housing and operated by non-profit organizations.
Additionally, the City has reduced fees to incentivize the development of smaller, more affordable market housing units (for rent and ownership) through a reduced development cost charge (DCC) rate for small unit and micro unit apartments. Since 2009, a total of 1,531 small unit and 16 micro unit apartments have been created under the small unit and micro unit apartment DCC rates. See the following link for more details on Development Cost Charges.
