Speed Limit Reduction Pilot
Background Information
Speed limits in Chilliwack are 50 km/h unless otherwise posted. While that may be suitable for major roads like Vedder Road and Yale Road, it’s not always the right fit for quieter neighbourhood streets. Across BC, many cities are introducing 40 km/h and 30 km/h limits, which have been shown to improve safety and help residents feel more comfortable on their roads.
The City has also heard from many residents who are concerned about speeding and road safety. In response, we’re piloting reduced speed limits in two Chilliwack neighbourhoods to see how these changes work in practice and how our community feels about them.
Pilot Project Details
Starting in November 2025, a 40 km/h speed limit will be introduced in two neighbourhoods: Fairfield Island and Garrison Crossing.
In Garrison Crossing, the reduced speed limit will apply to all roads within the neighbourhood between Watson Road and Keith Wilson Road. Both Watson Road and Keith Wilson Road will remain at 50 km/h.
In Fairfield Island, the 40 km/h limit will apply to all roads east of Young Road, north of Hope River Road, west of Bell Road and Wedgewood Drive, and south of Brinx Road. Young Road and Hope River Road will remain at 50 km/h. Maps showing the areas where the speed limits are changing can be found below.
To help inform drivers of the change, 40 km/h signs will be installed at all entry points into the affected areas.
