Reading Buddies is a program that pairs high school students and adult volunteers with kids in Grades 1 to 4 who need extra help. Sign up begins in September, and we will continue matching up buddies until spring 2017. To learn more, visit the Chilliwack, Sardis or Yarrow Library.

The Marriage Course which offers tools to any married couple, whether they have a strong marriage or are struggling, in order to help build a strong, healthy and lasting relationship that lasts a lifetime. Begins on Fri., Sept. 23 at 6:30 and meets once per week for 7 weeks. The evening begins with dinner, a video presentation on one of the following topics: Building Strong Foundations - The Art of Communication - Resolving Conflict - The Power of Forgiveness - Impact of Family: Past & Present - Good Sex - Love in Action; followed by workbook exercises prompting private couple discussions. Free for permanent residents, this 12 week program teaches how to stay fit and healthy. while meeting new friends and practicing English. Program is Fridays, 12:30-3:30.

National Seniors Day is a Government of Canada initiative to "pay tribute to the seniors who have helped build our country and continue to make valuable contributions to Canadian communities, workplaces and society". The event takes place across the country on October 1st of each year. For the 2016 observation, Chilliwack & District Seniors Resources Society has planned an event at the City of Chilliwack's Evergreen Hall from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. This event is an opportunity for community organizations and businesses to provide information about the products and services they offer to support seniors. There will be a dedicated exhibitor space in the main hall, workshops hosted in meeting rooms as well as on site entertainment and refreshments.

In this 3 hour brush script workshop, you will learn the print and script letterforms to take anything from mediocre to show stopping! With a complete course handout, small group instruction and all of Amanda`s tips and tricks, there is no better time to learn to letter. Amanda's work can be found on Silhouette America, pen packaging for Tombow USA, and cake toppers with Alexis Mattox Designs and all over Instagram. She is currently creating designs for Hobby Lobby and a book to be released in November 2016. With over 1000 ecstatic students now filling the world with her lettering, Amanda Arneill specializes in teaching others this beautiful art form. Every year, on the first Saturday of October at 11:00 am, mothers and children unite at different sites around the world to compete in the annual Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge to set a record for the most children breastfeeding at one time. The Challenge strives to increase public awareness of the normality of breastfeeding, the benefits to mother, child and community and the ways in which women need support to achieve the recommended duration for breastfeeding.

2 pm – 3:30 pm Did you know that almost ½ of Canadians don’t know how much of their working income will be replaced by CPP/OAS? Are you one of those seniors or pre-retirees with questions about your entitlement to Canada’s pension plans? This session, presented by Service Canada, will help you make informed decisions about your eligibility and benefits. Topics covered will include CPP Survivor and Disability benefits, benefits for the children of a deceased or disabled contributor, Credit Splitting, Pension Sharing, the Child Rearing Provision, Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement. Like you’ll be stoked to the max with Beetlejuice as the rad movie choice! Don’t be spazzing, just come in your gnarliest duds and get ready to party hardy! And don’t have a cow! Like popcorn and pizza will be provided. Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!

If you've already had your turkey dinner, come skate it off between 3pm - 5pm. Or, work up an appetite if dinner is still to come!

Wednesdays, Oct 12 – Dec 14, 2:30 pm – 4 pm When a child reads with a dog, they start to relax and forget about feeling nervous about reading. This is a free program for ages 6+ who want to improve their reading. Sessions will be facilitated by Taylah, a 5 year old Collie, and her handler Sue, both of whom have been trained by the St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog program. Space is limited; please contact the Yarrow Library to schedule a session.

12:45 pm – 1:45 pm Urban Safari Rescue Society will be at the Yarrow Library on Wednesday, Oct 12 at 12:45 pm with their rescued animals for a full hour of learning. Urban Safari will take you on a journey of exploration and discovery with animals ranging from insects to small mammals and other animal families in between. Find out what animal can lick its own eyeballs, why tarantulas have hair, what animals has a hinged door, and so much more. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Chilliwack Libraries Society.

2 pm – 4 pm Sardis Library will be doing Customer Appreciation Day on Thursday, October 13th from 2-4 pm with cake and coffee. We will also have Library Quiz the whole month of October.

7 pm – 9:30 pm No trivia is too trivial! Test your memory at the Friends of the Chilliwack Libraries Society 13th Annual Quiz Night. Come for a fun evening at the Chilliwack Library of laughter, groans and a chance to win the famous "Smarty Pants Award"! Win door prizes or buy tickets for the gift basket raffle! Bring your group of 8, or come alone and join others to form a team. Tickets for this popular event are $13 per person, include a snack and are available starting on September 16th at the Chilliwack Library.

Chilliwack Restorative Justice & Youth Advocacy Association will be hosting their Fall Bike Auction on Saturday, October 15, 2016. We have a change in location for the auction and will be setting up at McCammon Elementary School, 9601 Hamilton Street, Chilliwack. Over 100 bikes have been donated to the organization by the City of Chilliwack and the Chilliwack community. We always have a wide variety of bikes available; some are in good shape while others will need some work and repairs. The bike preview begins at 9am with the auction at 10am. We can accept cash as well as credit cards as forms of payment when purchasing a bike. Guywires Mobile Cycle Tech will be on site again offering bike inspections for a donation of $5.00. All proceeds will be donated back to Restorative Justice. Proceeds from the bike auction will support our prevention programs.

Check out our Market, where we will have over 40 tables of wonderful gifts ideas, including local vendors selling hand made or home grown products! There will be lots of door prizes from our vendors as well! We will have a BBQ concession on site, selling hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks! FREE ADMISSION!

11 am – 12 pm Come and celebrate Library Appreciation Month with stories, songs, and a puppet show. Master puppeteer and storyteller, Elspeth Bowers will take you to magical fairytale lands with an amusing library twist which will keep you laughing all the way.

3 pm – 4 pm Have you ever wanted every single Lego piece ever made? Lego Digital Designer allows you to build whatever you can imagine and more. We will explore the software together, view other Lego designs and build our own projects. The free software is easy to use and a lot of fun. Fraser Valley Makerspace will be visiting the Chilliwack Library with a bunch of cool techie stuff for you to play with and check out! This program is for ages 8 and up, registration is required.

"An Artful Afternoon" A pleasurable, informative and fun afternoon displaying artwork by residents, tenants and local artists. Music by duo "Jazz".

This event will take place from 1:30 to 4:00 pm. It is for interest and pleasure and not for profit.

Chilliwack Newcomer Connections is a cross sector partnership of Community groups and institutions established to create awareness of services for newcomers in Chilliwack and build connections and relationships across the community. 10:30 am – 12 pm Would you like to improve your skills using genealogy software such as Ancestry Library Edition? Share ideas, learn new tips and tricks, solve research roadblocks, and learn the history of the area and era you are researching. The Sardis Library Genealogy Group welcomes new members. Bring your laptop, or use the computers at the library to connect to Ancestry Library Edition after the meeting. Facilitated by Marlene Dance, UFV ElderCollege Instructor, and assisted by Joene Parker and Evan Parker.

2 pm – 4pm Scars, bruises and scabs, oh my! Learn how to create your own wounds, blood, burns and more. Teens are invited to join Makayla Barry from Mermaid Makeup Arts to learn techniques for awesome Halloween makeup, fake wounds and cool creative results. Appropriate for ages 12 and up. Join a qualified instructor in our parent workshop and learn how to sign with your baby through handouts, lectures, videos and interactive games. This is immediately followed by three Saturday interactive Sign, Say and Play classes for you and baby to practice what you have learned. Parent workshop is for adults only. Sign, Say and Play classes are for both baby and parent to attend. This class is geared towards babies six months and older. Registration is required.

“ COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES ” Local Abstract Artist Vincent Mikuska has used hints and suggestions of landscape elements in his work to try and create an essence or experience of the landscape. There is a willingness to create associations between different elements of a visual experience. A world where line has poetic rhythm, colour a musical tone. Space can be hinted or defined. “ I try and find new patterns without concentrating on recreating the details of what I see” The effect is to be a cumulative effect of looking, not a single stare but what happens as you visually interact with your surroundings over a given time.
