The information below is considered a general overview only and represents the most commonly requested information on parking regulations. This is not a complete list of regulations – please refer to the Highway and Traffic Bylaw to view all regulations.

Parking Without Sign Regulations

Parking regulations may be in effect whether or not there is a sign. Common parking regulations without a sign include:

Crosswalks

Parking is not allowed on a crosswalk or within 6 metres of the approach side of a Crosswalk.

Driveways

Parking is not allowed in front of a permitted public or private driveway. People may park up to the edge of a driveway.

Intersections

Parking is not allowed in, or within, 10 meters of an intersection. An intersection is where two public roads meet.

Fire Hydrants

Vehicles are not allowed to park within 5 metres of a fire hydrant, measured from a point in the curb or edge of the roadway closest to the fire hydrant.

Cul-de-sacs

Vehicles parking in cul-de-sacs reduce the turnaround area available for travelling vehicles and is therefore not permitted.

Sidewalks & Multi-Use Pathways

Parking is not permitted on sidewalks or multi-use pathways (MUPs). As sidewalks and MUPs are designed for use of pedestrians, vehicles parked on any portion of them may cause pedestrians to enter traffic to get around the parked vehicle. When a vehicle is parked in a driveway that has a sidewalk and MUP at the end of it, the vehicle must not hang over or encroach the sidewalk or MUP.

Parking on Streets Maximum Time

Vehicles (other than recreational vehicles) that are parked legally and not time limited by any posted signs may stay in the same location without moving for up to 7 days, or 72-hours in select neighbourhoods including Garrison Crossing, Rivers Edge, and Webster Landing.

Bike Lanes

Parking on a bike lane is not permitted.

Parking With Sign Regulations

Some parking regulations in Chilliwack will have a sign posted that reflects the details of the restriction. Restricted parking signs are in effect 24-hours a day, year round, including Statutory holidays unless otherwise posted. Common parking regulations with a sign include:

No Stopping Sign

Stopping in a "No Stopping" zone is not permitted at any time. “Stopping” means the complete cessation from movement of a vehicle, whether occupied or not, except to avoid a collision, obey a traffic control device or follow the instructions of a peace officer or traffic control person.

No Parking Sign

Parking in a "No Parking" zone is not permitted except while loading/unloading passengers or cargo, or in compliance with a direction given by a traffic control device.

Time Limit Parking Sign

Vehicles cannot be parked in the same area exceeding the time designated on the sign.

Loading Zone Sign

Parking in "Loading" zones is permitted for up to 30 minutes while loading or unloading passengers or goods.

Vehicles on City Streets Regulations

Recreational Vehicles

A recreational vehicle may be parked on the street for a maximum of 24 continuous hours before it must be parked off-street (i.e. on private property) for at least 24 hours before it can be returned to the street.

Unlicensed Vehicles

Vehicles must be licensed and display valid insurance for operation on City streets (number plate or temporary operation permit) to park on City streets. Storage insurance permits parking only on private property, not on City streets or other City property.

Overweight Vehicles

Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 5,500 kg or greater are not permitted to park overnight (between 7pm and 7am) on City streets in residential zones. Parking of these vehicles is permitted on City streets in residential zones during the day (between 7am and 7pm), and in commercial, industrial and agricultural zones at all times.

Trailers

A trailer must, at all times, be hooked up to a vehicle capable of towing or pulling it.
