CITY OF CHILLIWACK 2025 Annual Report 46 47 2025 Annual Report CITY OF CHILLIWACK ENGINEERING The Engineering Department ensures efficient and effective delivery of projects and services within Chilliwack. The department consists of four divisions: 1. Transportation & Drainage is responsible for the planning, design and construction of transportation, drainage, and flood protection infrastructure. This division is also responsible for the maintenance and operation of streetlight and traffic signal systems, and public transit. 2. Utilities is responsible for the planning, design, and construction of sewer and water infrastructure, plus water supply and wastewater source control. 3. Environmental Services is responsible for curbside waste collection, Parr Road Green Depot, and the operation of the Bailey Landfill. This division is also responsible for initiatives supporting environmental protection, waste reduction, biodiversity, and climate action. 4. Property Management is responsible for property purchases, sales, leases, tenures, easements, rights-ofways, and management agreements for City owned properties. Transportation and Drainage Tyson Road - Stevenson Road to Watson Road • Upgraded the signalized intersection and widened the road at South Sumas Road. • Installed curb and multi-use pathways on both sides of Tyson Road. • Completed 1,270 metres of road widening and reconstruction. • Added new streetlights, road markings, and trees. 2025 HIGHLIGHTS Luckakuck Way - Traffic Signal and Safety Improvements Project • Installed a new traffic control signal at the north access into Superstore complete with signalized crosswalks and audible pedestrian signals. • Completed new designated left turn lanes with concrete medians. • Installed a new multi-use pathway including lighting. Bailey Road Multi-Use Pathway Completed 670 metres of paved pathway separate from the roadway, between Chilliwack River Road and Matheson Road, in partnership with Ch’íyáqtel First Nation. Banford Bridge Replacement • Replaced an existing 7 metres wide timber bridge with a new 9 metres wide concrete girder bridge. • Re-aligned associated utilities for drainage, water, and gas. 9.6 KM ROADS REPAVED 0.75 KM NEW BIKE LANES 123 NEW LED STREETLIGHTS 3 CULVERTS REPLACED 1.52 KM NEW SIDEWALKS 16 STREETLIGHTS RETROFITTED TO LED 12.45 KM ROAD WIDENING 4.05 KM CURB AND GUTTER REPAVED 5 KM NEW MULTI-USE PATHWAYS Chilliwack River Road Sidewalk Installed 350 metres of curb and sidewalk along the west side of the road, in partnership with Ch’íyáqtel First Nation, connecting with Promontory Road to provide access to transit, schools, and shopping. Victoria Avenue Parking Lot • 25 new parking stalls. • Six new trees. • New LED streetlighting. 30 ROAD CULVERT CROSSING INSPECTIONS COMPLETED 2 ROAD BRIDGES RECEIVED MAJOR STRUCTURAL UPGRADES Hocking Avenue - McIntosh Drive to The Valley Rail Trail • Completed upgrades including repaving of the roadway and traffic signal improvements at Yale Road and Hocking Avenue. • Installed a multi-use pathway with street lighting and a boulevard with trees connecting the pathway on McIntosh Drive to the Valley Rail Trail. Yale Road - The Breezeway to Nowell Street Completed final upgrades at District 1881 meeting the downtown standard with stamped concrete boulevard, trees, new curb and sidewalk, and street lighting with baskets. Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Bridge Repair • Completed repairs at the main access crossing of Salwein Creek. • Repaired the bridge decking and replaced all timber members of the superstructure at each pier with steel hardware. Parker Road Bridge Rehabilitation • Completed repairs to strengthen the timber bridge that crosses Big Ditch from Upper Prairie Road to Parker Road. • Increased the bridge load rating to meet provincial standards and to allow crossing for emergency vehicles and farm equipment. • Repaired the abutments, pile caps, struts, wing walls, and doubled the number of timber stringers. • Improved the turning radius and safety barrier for motorist safety.
