Definitions and Resources: Independent Housing

Seniors’ Subsidized Rental Housing, BC Housing is affordable rental housing for individuals over 55 years of age with low incomes (an annual household income less than $58,000 in the Lower Mainland). Rent is subsidized by the government or another source, and is normally set at 30% of one’s income. Generally (though not always) there are no services provided and the apartment units are small bachelor suites. There are often long wait lists for subsidized housing. Phone (toll-free): 1-800-257-7756 Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER), BC Housing program helps make rents affordable for BC seniors with low to moderate incomes. SAFER provides monthly cash payments to subsidize rents for eligible BC residents who are age 60 or over and who pay rent for their homes. Seniors who pay pad rental fees for owner- occupied manufactured homes are also eligible for SAFER funding. Phone (toll-free): 1-800-267-7756
