CITY OF CHILLIWACK 2025 Annual Report 58 59 2025 Annual Report CITY OF CHILLIWACK PUBLIC WORKS AND PARKS The Public Works and Parks Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of parks and trails, sports fields, roadways, open drainage systems, storm sewers, and dyke infrastructure. The department maintains more than 1,500 kilometres of roads and storm drainage infrastructure and over 150 parks and natural areas, encompassing over 400 hectares of green space. In addition, the department maintains over 100 kilometres of recreational trails, ranging from challenging hillside routes to accessible, flat riverside pathways. Open Channel Drainage Maintenance Program Elk Creek shale trap conditions before undertaking flood control work and after channel excavation flood control work, which stretched from the shale trap to Highway 1. Salvaged Oregon Spotted Frog and Coho Salmon prior to initiating channel excavations. BEFORE AFTER Completed approximately 75,000 linear metres of open drainage channels maintenance and water quality monitoring during the channel cleaning excavations. • Installed spray zones at Webster, Fairfield, and Philippson Family Parks. • Installed new play structures and upgraded play surfaces at Chehalis Park. • Upgraded existing play surfaces at Cheamview and Webster Parks. • Expanded Garden Drive Park in response to community requests. • Added a new neighbourhood park on Crestwood Drive. • Added a new park within a natural area on Russell Road. Accessibility Improvements to Playgrounds • Added interactive play elements at Chehalis, Cheamview, and Webster Parks. • Added 16 new accessible parking stalls at various park and trail access points. • Installed accessibility structures and a larger rubber surface at Jinkerson Park. • Installed a new accessible swing at the Bill Kelly Playground. Trail Improvements • Replaced wooden steps with durable recycled plastic lumber at the corner of Teskey Way and Alpine Crescent. • Updated trail maps, enhanced the trailhead, and replaced the trail steps in Promontory. • Expanded the Little Mountain trail network by approximately one kilometre.
