Annual Report 2021 49 48 City of Chilliwack The Recreation & Culture Department is responsible for the coordination and the provision of leisure services within Chilliwack. This department is responsible for facility maintenance, community events and sports field bookings. Recreation & Culture operates: y Evergreen Hall y The Landing Sports Centre y Sardis Sports Complex y 3 synthetic turf fields y 58 grass sports fields y 69 ball diamonds The department coordinates the contracted operations of: y Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre y Cheam Leisure Centre y Chilliwack Cultural Centre y Chilliwack Heritage Park y Chilliwack, Sardis and Yarrow Libraries y Rotary Outdoor Pool y Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Recreation & Culture 60,140 VISITORS TO CHEAM CENTRE 41,843 VISITORS TO THE LANDING LEISURE CENTRE 7,074 VISITORS TO CHILLIWACK CULTURAL CENTRE 2,466 MUSEUM VISITS Ø Cheam Leisure Centre received gold-level rating for accessiblity from Rick Hansen Foundation Ø Supported 22 community events, including the Christmas Village, which impacted 13,000 people Ø Community Markets y Three new outdoor markets: ҇ Vedder Farm Market - Watson Glen Park ҇ Downtown Chilliwack Community Market ҇ Chilliwack 24-hour Bidding Market y Return of two well established markets: Eco Market at Sardis Park and Yarrow Farm Market Ø Grant funding received for replacement of HIG/Metal Halide lighting, to LED, for Fire Hall #1 parking lot 2021 HIGHLIGHTS Tourism Chilliwack Inc. 124,000+ USES OF #SHARECHILLIWACK 17,600 INSTAGRAM FOLLOWERS 9,774 FACEBOOK FOLLOWERS Led by a private sector Board of Directors, Tourism Chilliwack was incorporated in December 2006 with the City of Chilliwack as its sole shareholder. Tourism Chilliwack was originally established in 1998 as a subsidiary of the Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation (CEPCO). Destination Management Organizations reflect the health and well-being of the local travel industry, and directly reflect the impact of the accommodations sector in their communities. It is a success-based model and one that has a proven track record of success, because it motivates the organization to achieve more, perform better and be creative and innovative. Ø Adopted the Sí:yá:ya Yóyes - Friends Working (Together) Plan y Plan tailored to guide Tourism Chilliwack in providing tangible contributions to the reconciliation process with Indigenous peoples y To ensure inclusivity in the work and contributions to the National Truth and Reconciliation plan and to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples y Purpose is to enable Tourism Chilliwack to integrate the existing strategies, frameworks, and policies to expand the collaboration, skills and expertise as they strive to build strong relationships with Indigenous peoples in a culturally safe organization Ø Chilliwack Art Trail Together with the City of Chilliwack, launched the Digital Public Art Campaign: The Chilliwack Art Trail Ø Mobile Visitor Services aka “Winston” the Cube Van y Connected to residents - built community pride and encouraged them to be tourists in their own backyard y Serviced existing visitors to ensure a more enriched Chilliwack experience y Located in high traffic areas Ø Meet the Maker Video Series Showcases local people using their passion and talent to make our community a better place to work, play and live 2021 HIGHLIGHTS
