Eastern Hillsides Balancing
Reservoir
Design work commenced on the
construction of the balancing reservoir
to stabilize the water system pressure
in eastern Chilliwack. The project is
scheduled to be completed by the Fall of
2013.
Sanitary Pump Station #2
Replacement of header piping,
check valves and installation of flow
meter chamber including minor
improvement works to structural and
electrical elements to ensure future
use and adequate capacity for future
development.
Whispering Falls Grit Chamber
Installation of Grit Chamber on the Falls
gravity forcemain in Eastern Hillsides
to prevent large size particles entering
into the forcemain thereby avoiding it
clogging.
Water Loss Study
Completed water loss study for the water
supply system to determine the amount
of unknown unaccounted water and
how to mitigate water losses within the
distribution system.
Wastewater Treatment Plant
Upgrade
Construction of Digester # 3:
Constructed 2,100 m3 primary sludge
digester at the Wastewater Treatment
Plant to provide necessary expansion for
the existing solid waste facilities to allow
for an increase in sewered population.
Water Conservation
Campaign
A comprehensive water conservation plan
was designed and implemented to reduce
summer peak water demand to a more
sustainable level. The Program included
the following activities:

Conducted poster contest to students
in grades four to six as research
shows that future habits and lifestyles
are most influenced during this age;

Collaborated with the Chilliwack
School Board and over 500 students
to learn more on the Chilliwack water
supply and ways to conserve it;

Toilet rebate program was continued;
»
»
Carried out a radio campaign during
summer months to educate and
make residents aware of importance
of water conservation and follow
instructions on how to use automatic
sprinklers;

Continued with summer sprinkler
restrictions program from June 1st to
September 30th.
Fraser River Freshet Response
Monitored snowpack, weather and river
conditions and coordinated response
activities with Public Works during the
2012 freshet, which was approximately a
1 in 20 year event.
Vedder River Gravel Mngmt.
39,000 cubic metres of gravel was
removed from three City-owned gravel
bars in the Vedder River in order to
maintain the flow capacity of the Vedder
River floodway.
Vedder River Mngmt. Study
Work continued on a study to update
the management process for the Vedder
River corridor to incorporate new
environmental information and current
understanding of the hydraulic processes
of the river.
