The Fraser river: Its
Spirit and Place
For 10,000 years the Fraser River
has pierced through the centre of our
Province before reaching the Fraser
Valley and a slow meandering journey
to the Pacific Ocean. For most of its
life, the river offered food and material
resources that enabled the Stó:lō,
(the People of the River), to thrive and
expand in a series of villages located
along the river. The section that flows
by Chilliwack is called the gravel reach.
Here the river supports 30 species
of fish, and provides rich habitats for
resident and migrating birds and a host
of mammal species. In the last century
the river began to change. Flood
control measures and developments
have altered the landscape and are
threatening the health of the river. This
exhibit looks at the history of the Fraser
River and why, today, it is important to
understand the processes that created
the river and have sustained it for so
many centuries.
