That’s the motto of the Chilliwack
Academy of Music, founded in 1979 to
provide high quality private and group
lessons to the community, foster interest
and participation in music and increase
musical opportunities
locally.
“The Academy”
is a non-profit,
charitable
organization
that
utilizes
government grants, business support,
and individual donations to subsidize
music lessons. In other words, students
truly get more than they pay for. And
compared to a typical music school
business, more tuition goes directly to the
teacher, less to pay administration, and
none to profit.
The result is a stable, highly qualified
roster of instructors who are devoted to
cultivating the potential of each student.
All of the Academy’s carefully screened
teachers are seasoned professionals.
ARCT-level performing and teaching
ability is the minimum credential,
though most have bachelour, master or
doctorate degrees in their instrument,
too.
For those who want to excel, the
Academy has numerous examples of
students who have earned top marks
on exams and won trophies in music
festivals – even competed at the
provincial level! Many Academy alum
have gone on to post-secondary music
studies and careers as performers and
teachers.
For the recreational learner, the Academy
can help discover the musical side of
every person. Regular performing or
jamming outlets are offered, including
studio recitals, choirs, group guitar, “Uke
Club” and a drum circle. Students also
gain the skills to excel in local musical
theatre productions, orchestras and rock
bands.
From the first lesson, students get the
best training in a nurturing setting. In fact,
the Academy welcomes students from
newborn to senior – its oldest student last
year was 82! No one is too young, too
old, or too inexperienced for lessons at
the Academy. In fact, the love of music
and the desire to share it with the whole
community is why the Academy exists.
