The Recreation & Culture Department is responsible for the coordination and/or provision of leisure services. The department operates a number of facilities, coordinates the use of numerous sports fields and parks and is responsible for community events, public art and facility maintenance. RECREATION & CULTURE 2024 HIGHLIGHTS Supported 63 community events with participation of 188,900 residents. Celebration and Activity Grant – 42 events supported. – 5,214 residents participated. – Provided $9,043 in Neighbourhood Grant funding to support block parties. The Utility Operations Department provides water and sewer services to over 20,000 properties within municipal boundaries. Utility Operations maintains and operates: UTILITY OPERATIONS 1,200 FIRE HYDRANTS DISMANTLED, SERVICED & REBUILT 2,000+ REPAIRS & PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE WORK ORDERS COMPLETED y 10 drinking water production wells. y 15 potable water pump stations. y 19 water reservoirs. y 64 sanitary pump stations. y Four drainage pumping stations. y Over 1,500 km of sanitary sewer mains and water distribution pipes. 2024 HIGHLIGHTS 27 BROKEN WATER MAINS REPAIRED THROUGHOUT WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM Purchased grout injection equipment to complete manhole repairs more effectively, as part of the Manhole Rehabilitation Program. Purchased a mini excavator to provide versatility for the underground utilties staff. The excavator is an integral part of daily operations and increases efficiency within the department. Developed the Sewer Air Valve Replacement program to assess and replace aging air valves to ensure reliable operation of the waste water collection system. The department is also responsible for overseeing and monitoring drinking water quality as well as the operation and maintenance of various systems including potable water system, sanitary sewer system, and the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). y 28 civic facilities including Atchelitz Hall. y 126 outdoor grass sports fields. y 4 synthetic turf facilities. y Evergreen Hall and The Landing Sports Centre. y Heritage Park. y The Cheam Leisure Centre and the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre. y The Rotary Pool. y The Sardis Sports Complex. y The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve.
