This is a non-profit organization. Applications to join start Dec. 1st, and the Challenge starts January 21, 2018.

PRESS RELEASE: 171206 – Patricia Peters & Kathleen Menges – “Kindred Spirits” – A Fusion in Wax Patricia Peters and Kathleen Menges are teaming up again to share their talents and art featuring works uniquely created with the ancient medium of wax. Both artists have worked in the luscious and temperamental encaustic medium. Hot wax requires heat as a solvent to move paint around and fuse the layers together. Encaustic painting can have a spectacular transparent polish or depth to the product, through to a textural relief. This exhibition showcases the evolution of their work in wax processes from encaustic to that of oil and cold wax. This latter medium looks like paste and does not require heat but rather uses mineral spirits as a solvent. This typically gives a matte finish which can vary from a silky smooth texture to an organic, hand-rubbed polish. With cold wax medium brushes are replaced by palette knives, silicon blades, brayers, squeegees, and rollers, to name only a few tools of the craftwork. In this exhibition, pigments and/or oil paint, plus cold wax medium have been thoughtfully layered to create dynamic and sometimes mysterious images. Kathleen and Patricia speak a similar language because of the common use of tools, surfaces, and product but the imagery and handling of their paint is dramatically different and artistically unique. After viewing their work one can easily determine who is Ying and who is Yang. One artist exhibits energy and colorful variety while the other is more meditative, serene, and peaceful. Their combined work is diverse and brings to light the subtleties, grace, and complexities of the highly unusual medium of oil and cold wax. Both artists will be available January 13, 2018, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm to respond to comments and questions during the opening reception at the O’Conner Gallery. On January 20, from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm, they will be hosting a hands-on workshop.

The YMCA Youth Works program helps youth gain the confidence, skills and experience to secure and maintain employment. This FREE job readiness program offers one-on-one support with experienced career advisors, job search and work placement supports. Our next group starts in February! Choices of training such as First Aid, Food Safe, Super Host, SIR, WHMIS, Forklift, Fall Protection, Serving It Right, and more! Other benefits of this program include transportation and food support.

Friday, Feb 2 & Saturday, Feb 3, 10 am – 4 pm. This year the Friends of the Chilliwack Libraries Society will be holding their annual sale at the Sardis Library! All types of puzzles are available, stock up at very reasonable prices. Don’t forget to bring in your gently used puzzles to Sardis Library starting January 2, 2018 to receive coupons for half price on selected puzzles.

7 pm – 8:30 pm. All "uked" up and no place to jam? All levels of experience are welcome at our fun and relaxed ukulele circle. This program is in partnership with the Chilliwack Academy of Music. Space is limited. Please arrive early to avoid disappointment.

2 pm – 3 pm. Join the Friends of the Chilliwack Libraries Society on the first Wednesday of every month. This volunteer organization supports the library through advocacy, fundraising and assistance with various projects and programs. New friends are always welcome!

2:30 pm – 4 pm. Turn everyday objects into touchpads and connect them to the Internet. Learn how pencil lead can open and close electrical circuits, turn bananas into a piano and use playdoh as a controller for a video game.

1 pm – 2:30 pm. This free drop-in session will go over the basics of meditation. Participants will have an opportunity to put their newly acquired skills into practice with instructor Kristy Van den Bosch. Everybody can benefit from meditation and this is a safe space to try it out for the first time or to try it again with a different practitioner.

10:30am - 12:30. Harmony singing workshop with English Folk singer Helen Shilladay. Anyone can learn to sing! We will begin with some vocal warm-ups, followed by learning a call-and-response song and a simple round to get our voices going. In the main part of the session, we will aim to learn a more complex 3-part harmony song. Beginners and more experienced singers age 14 and over welcome. (Under 18s must be accompanied, please.)

Just bring your voices and a refillable water bottle. 🎼

This Family Day, Twin Rinks is opening up both sheets of ice for an afternoon of family fun! We invite you to join us on February 12 from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm for this FREE skate!

Join our monthly BeTween Book Club and bring along your mom, grandpa, sister (you decide) who also loves to read! We read books, have lively discussions, eat snacks and meet other book lovers! Recommended for ages 9-13.

2:30 pm – 4 pm. Come to the library to meet Sphero SPRK+, a small robotic ball that you control with a smartphone or tablet. Make it roll around, change colours or run a program that you create yourself. Bring your imagination and get ready for fun.

Donna Hitchens’ Press Release - Donna’s or Donya’s art is known as “Visionary Art” which is a title related to self-taught artists. Her creations are a result of her adaptations within the style known as Modern Art today. Donna’s paintings are an expression of her feelings, using acrylic on canvas. She begins by thinking about a subject she may have seen, or begun to imagine. They begin with bright colours, and the brush strokes express her desire to highlight her vision of what lies within the abstract thought. Whether that vision is of an animal, a flower, or a person, the work is meant to draw attention to the parts of the painting that will stir a feeling expressed by the colours and what else lies within. Donna originally worked with pottery and clay sculptures, and then changed over to acrylic painting in 1995. Since then her work has been accepted and shown in many venues since 2004, including being in the Lobby Art in the Cultural Centre, in January 2016.

Open Wednesday through Saturday from 12 noon until 5 pm. Reception Feb.4th 1 pm to 4 pm.

Thursdays, 10:30 am – 11 am. Making language fun! Start early with babytime. Help your baby develop speech and language skills – enjoy bouncing, singing and rhyming with stories. Babytime is a fun, social bonding activity for babies AND caregivers.

2 pm – 4 pm. Make some wonderful string designs using only string and pins! Create colourful 3D images in all kinds of shapes! For children grades K – 6. Registration is required.

2 pm – 3:30 pm Learn to draw and sketch with local artist John Le Flock. Pencil a 3 dimensional art work using line and shading techniques to create light and shadow effects. All supplies will be provided. For ages 13 and up. Registration is required.

Family friendly 5km walk-a-thon to raise funds for the homeless, hungry, and hurting youth in our community. Statistically, the third Saturday of February in the coldest night of the year across Canada so we walk in the evening to experience the conditions youth experience living on the streets every night. CircusWest Performing Arts Society presents, FIREFLIGHT, their new feature length production from their professional division "Verve Inspired Circus".
