Lexw Qwò:m Park Celebration April 25, 2019

Chilliwack, BC: Members of the public are invited to join Mayor and Council for a celebration of Chilliwack’s newest park, Lexw Qwò:m Park, on Saturday, May 4 at 11 am. Located in the Eastern Hillsides area at 51930 Hack Brown Road, just off the Annis Road freeway exit, Lexw Qwò:m Park features a day use picnic area, parking lot and a trail network that connects to the Community Forest.

The project was made possible thanks, in part, to the Chilliwack Park Society, who built the trail network within the park through volunteer labour. The City funded the project, constructed the parking lot and day use area, refurbished the disused Dunville Creek and Nevin Creek water intake structures as trail bridges, and supplied trail building materials to trail building volunteers.

“This park celebrates its history while providing a new space for families, hikers and bikers to get outside and enjoy the fresh air,” said Mayor Popove. “Lexw Qwò:m is the result of collaboration between local stakeholders, and I look forward to celebrating its opening together.”

Lexw Qwò:m Park was given its name in consultation with Carrielynn Victor, who previously worked for Stó:lō Nation and is a member of the Cheam First Nation. In the Halq'eméylem language, “Lexw Qwò:m” means always lots of moss, which is fitting for the park as the area consists of old growth rain forest which is covered year round in blankets of moss.

The park and connecting trails are open to the public.
