Community Parks
The City of Chilliwack and the Chilliwack Rotary Club have partnered on many community projects in the past; none more significant to the community than the Rotary Centennial Project that began in January, 2005. What transpired was the total transformation of Jean McNaughton and Happy Wilkinson Parks into a major, attractive, multipurpose, community-oriented urban park – a place where everyone in the community is welcome to enjoy outdoor performances, special events, festivals, and to learn about the history of the park and the surrounding area.
By the grand opening of the park on October 13, 2006, the 1 hectare site was transformed into this vision with a large outdoor amphitheatre, washrooms, interactive water feature, adjacent playground, special lighting, pathways and interpretative signage, along with significant architectural features to make everyone feel welcome and proud of their new community park. Fittingly, a new name was needed for the transformed park, and City Council endorsed the name 'Central Community Park' to identify this site as an important community asset centrally located in the heart of downtown Chilliwack.
This project was planned and implemented by a number of partners, including the Rotary Club of Chilliwack, Rotary Club of Chilliwack/Mt. Cheam, Rotary Club of Chilliwack/Fraser, City of Chilliwack, School District #33, Downtown BIA, Craven/Huston/Powers Architects and the RCMP.
The Spray Park
The spray park is popular with toddlers and children on a hot summer day.
To help conserve water, this spray park is on a manually activated switch and generally operates from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm from the end of May until Labour Day weekend.
Party in the Park
The City of Chilliwack has embraced this park and has programmed it with many special events. The most significant of which is Party in the Park. For more information on downtown events see the BIA website.
Adopt a Park/ Adopt a Trail
The City of Chilliwack has partnered with a number of local organizations and non-profit groups to develop an Adopt-a-Park and Adopt-a-Trail program. Groups volunteer their time to cleanup parks and trails in Chilliwack, to keep the community looking its best!
Greenspace / Trail Network Plans
Created as a supporting document to Chilliwack's Official Community Plan (OCP) the Greenspace Plan and supplementary Trail Network Plan sets out the City's goals and visions for developing new parks and trails over the coming decades.
