Reading Buddies is a program that pairs high school students and adult volunteers with kids in Grades 1 to 4 who need extra help. Sign up begins in September, and we will continue matching up buddies until spring 2017. To learn more, visit the Chilliwack, Sardis or Yarrow Library.

This 12 week program runs Fridays from 12:30-3:30. It is about staying fit and healthy, and is free for permanent residents.

Wednesdays, Oct 12 – Dec 14, 2:30 pm – 4 pm When a child reads with a dog, they start to relax and forget about feeling nervous about reading. This is a free program for ages 6+ who want to improve their reading. Sessions will be facilitated by Taylah, a 5 year old Collie, and her handler Sue, both of whom have been trained by the St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog program. Space is limited; please contact the Yarrow Library to schedule a session.

“ COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES ” Local Abstract Artist Vincent Mikuska has used hints and suggestions of landscape elements in his work to try and create an essence or experience of the landscape. There is a willingness to create associations between different elements of a visual experience. A world where line has poetic rhythm, colour a musical tone. Space can be hinted or defined. “ I try and find new patterns without concentrating on recreating the details of what I see” The effect is to be a cumulative effect of looking, not a single stare but what happens as you visually interact with your surroundings over a given time. Trying to get to the essence without the details.

“Bright Ideas” of student directors featured in UFV Theatre’s dynamic production of 7 Stories The second production of UFV Theatre’s “Bright Ideas” season is Morris Panych’s absurd comedy 7 Stories, a directing collaboration of fourth-year students Natasha Beaumont and Courtney Kelley. The play tells the story of a man deliberating suicide on the ledge of a high-rise building who is drawn into the bizarre personal lives of the building’s residents. 7 Stories runs November 24 – December 4. “One of the goals that we are hoping to accomplish with this show is recognizing the idea that every person is living their own unique life; and that this life can look completely different from an outside perspective,” says Kelley. “Contrast, perspective, and personal attitudes are all explored in 7 Stories, and we are aiming to do this in a very approachable way for the audience. We are working on showcasing the humour in the piece just as much as the distress. We want to highlight that both can exist in the same space at the same time, and just how that relationship works.” 7 Stories features the acting talents of Victoria Beaumont, Phay Gagnon, Des Hale, Blake Kimber, Emily MacKinnon, Mhairi McKay and Matthew Strauss. Now in its 37th season, UFV Theatre is taking a brand-new approach. With a theme of Bright Ideas: Contemporary, Student-Produced Performances, the 2016/17 promises innovative, eccentric, and electric plays that will challenge and engage audiences. “We are thrilled about this new approach to the season of theatre and are very excited to see students’ work culminate in seeing their artistic visions come to life on stage,” says Theatre department head Heather Davis-Fisch. Coming next March is Anne Carson’s interpretation of Bakkhai by Euripides, with collaborative direction and design by UFV theatre professors Raïna von Waldenburg and Parjad Sharifi. This contemporary adaptation of the classic Greek tragedy will integrate physical theatre and digital projection. The season closes in April with Grand Theft Terra Firma: Stories of (Re)Conciliation. A devised piece (created by the performers) directed by Phay Gagnon, this performance explores how S’ólh Téméxw — the traditional and unceded territories of the Stó:lō people — was colonized in the 1850s and 1860s and asks how that history is lived today. UFV Theatre will be launching its long-awaited Theatre major in January 2017. Part of the Bachelor Arts degree, the major allows students to develop foundational performance, communication, and technical skills and offer extensive opportunities to enrich their creative and research practices. All UFV Theatre’s programs offer small class sizes, faculty and staff with extensive professional and academic credentials, rigorous courses, and the opportunity for students to develop creative skills and practical experience by working onstage and behind the scenes on productions. 7 Stories runs Nov 24 – Dec 4 at the UFV Performance Theatre, 45635 Yale Road, Chilliwack. 3 pm – 4 pm Fraser Valley Makerspace will be visiting the Chilliwack Library with a bunch of cool techie stuff for you to play with and check out! Come see a 3D printer in action! This class will be a brief overview of the various types of 3D printers currently available and how they work. There will be demonstrations of real 3D printers at the library! This program is for ages 8 and up.

ARTISTS CHOICE For our last show of 2016, the CVAA group show will be called Artists Choice. We have chosen a title, instead of a theme. This gives the artists a much freer choice, and the ability to display something already painted, carved, sculpted, or photographed. We do not have to begin trying to bring to life somebody else’s idea, so now we can bring out something we have already created.. We do not mean something hidden away in an attic, gathering dust, but a piece of art for which we had a new, perhaps exciting idea, , and to which we gave life, without being bound by a theme which might not necessarily fit in with our own talent, or choice of medium. .Nothing shown previously in one of our shows, but new, and fresh maybe a change from our usual style? A different journey, following a different type of visual art, pushing the boundaries? All things are possible with freedom!

Celebrate the onset of the 2016 Christmas season with the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra & Chorus on Dec. 10th at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre as they present Tchaikovsky’s NUTCRACKER SUITE. Local talent from the Fraser Valley Academy of Dance will be showcased in performance of this traditional favourite. A sparkling assortment of musical Yuletide treats, including a beautiful harp solo, are also planned to entertain the entire family throughout the evening. Accompanied by the orchestra, The Chilliwack Children’s Choir and the Chilliwack Symphony Chorus will sing an array of classical and contemporary cherished Christmas selections. Invited to arrive at 7:30 p.m., the audience will be truly uplifted by the musical magic that will ring in the true spirit of Christmas. Admission starts at $25 (students $15).
