| Hot, Dry Weather Heightens Fire Concerns | August 6, 2014 |
The Chilliwack Fire Department would like to remind the community that our road medians, grass shoulders and ditches continue to be the source for many small fires. This year alone the Fire Department has attended to over 35 bark mulch fires, many caused by motorists that discard their cigarettes while waiting at traffic signals. Additionally, rural ditches are dry and are a potential source for grass fires. These fires can easily ignite and spread rapidly in windy conditions and potentially become a very dangerous fire that could threaten structures. The Chilliwack Fire Department is requesting everyone’s cooperation in properly discarding smoking materials into their car receptacle to avoid these preventable incidents from occurring. The Fire Department continues to respond to many back yard fires in the community. The Open Air Burning regulations within the city boundaries currently do not allow for burning of wood or like materials inside of city boundaries. Charcoal, gas fired or electric grills for the purpose of cooking are permitted along with gas fireplaces and outdoor heaters.
